China work permit and visa renewal is much quicker and cost-saving than applying for a new one under China’s recently revised system, which requires a notarized university degree, proof of employment, a medical test, and a criminal record check, among other documents. Based on the new system and policy, it may cost 4-6 weeks to finish all the process. There's two steps for the renewal process. The relevant required materials are listed below.
I. Work Permit Renewal
1. For applicant:
(1) Passport copy, current resident permit page copy, last entry stamp page copy;
(2) Work permit card copy (front and back page);
(3) Applicant's latest labor contract (need to show the exact position, contract period, work content, how long work in China every year, must in Chinese version);
(4) Individual Income Tax (IIT) report (for Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen of normal application, it is not necessary now, but some application is required; for other cities, the IIT report is must for all applications).
2. For employer:
Employer company need to register on the Foreigner Work Permit system and status shows normal. As of February 28, 2018, foreign companies must submit work permit renewal applications for their foreign workers at least 30 days before his or her work permit expires, according to a notice from SAFEA. If the company misses the deadline to renew the work permit, the company will need to follow the procedures for applying for a new work permit.
II. Work Visa Renewal
1. Original passport (need to keep in immigration bureau for 7 working days (Shanghai), for Beijing and other cities need to keep for 10-15 working days);
2. Temporary police registration resident paper;
3. Work permit card;
4. Original company business license;
5. Application letter;
6. For 2/3/5 years work visa application requires extra documents.
