Business licenses are permits issued by government agencies that allow individuals or companies to conduct business within the government's geographical jurisdiction. It is the authorization to start a business issued by the local government.Business licenses vary between countries, states, and local municipalities. There are often many licenses, registrations and certifications required to conduct a business in a single location.
Behind the business license exists a long tail of other certificates from a list of different government departments, giving you authority to employ staff, pay social security, issue VAT invoices & file tax, import goods and a host of others depending on your area of business.
In mainland China, it is very common for many companies such as shops and restaurants to display their business license in their premises to demonstrate to customers that they are a legitimate business. Just look around any shop that you visit in China and you'll probably notice the business license hanging up on the wall near the cashier.
Business license certificates are only available in Chinese writing. In simple terms, the license contains the key details of the company’s registration and specifies details such as their:
1) Registration Number;
2) Official Company Name;
3) Company Type;
4) Registered Address;
5) Legal Representative;
6) Registered Capital;
7) Date of Establishment;
8) License Expiry Date;
9) Business Scope;
10) Registration Bureau.
From October 1st 2016, the Chinese government have gone one step further, and combined 5 certificates into 1, which means that submitting the required materials and information to one department (AIC) will automatically transit the data to 4 other departments. As well as combined Original Business License, Organization Code Certificate and Tax Registration Certificate, the new business license will also cover the:
1) Original Business License;
2) Organisation Code Certificate;
3) Tax Registration Certificate;
4) Social insurance registration certificate;
5) Statistics registration certificate.
Previously, each of these separate applications took 2-3 working days, so the new 5-in-1 business license represents a further time-saving of around 1 week in the application process.
