China is creating a new zone south of Beijing for economic reform in a project heralded by state media as the most significant one of its kind in a quarter century.The new economic zone – called Xiong’an New Area – will facilitate the economic integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province. Xiong’an is the 19th “national new area” created since 1992. All of them were approved by the State Council, China’s cabinet, but Xiong’an is the first to be simultaneously endorsed by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
Xiongan New Area (Chinese: 雄安新区) is a state-level new area in Hebei, China established in April 1, 2017. It is about 100 km southwest of Beijing. The area covers the counties of Xiong, Rongcheng and Anxin. Its name is a compound of the first elements of the names of the two counties: Xiongxian and Anxin. The Xiong’an New Area, located about 130 kilometers (80 miles) to the south of Beijing and Tianjin, forms essentially an equilateral triangle with the two municipalities. It consists mainly of three counties in Hebei province and initially covers 100 square kilometers.
Xiongan New Area establishment is part of the measures to advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It will help phase out some economic management and service functions from Beijing. It also marks China's efforts to solve problems facing big cities, like traffic jams and heavy smog.
Xiongan New Area is aims to develop into a green, ecological and livable area, a leading innovation-driven development area, and a demonstration zone for coordinated and innovative development. The special zone was expected to house many non-government facilities, including markets, schools, research institutions and hospitals, which would be relocated from Beijing.
