Xiongan New Area, established in April 2017, is a new economic zone about 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing in Hebei province. It is the third new area of national significance after the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Shanghai Pudong New Area. Its main function is to serve as a development hub of advancing the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Introduction to Xiongan New Area
Located about 100km (60 miles) south-west of central Beijing, it covers the counties of Xiongxian, Rongcheng and Anxin, and is home to Baiyangdian, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in North China. It has an initial phase development area of 100 km2, composed of 60 villages in Rongcheng and Anxin. The New Area would plan to be eventually expanded to 2000 km2 in the future.
The area features geological advantages, convenient transportation, an excellent ecological environment, ample resources and lots of room for development. With good road and rail access, Xiongan commuters will be able reach Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang in about 30 minutes.The site is only 55 km from Beijing's new airport.
The area also has a pleasant environment with a relatively low degree of urbanization. Less than 100,000 people currently live in the core area, about the same of a regular residential community in Beijing.
Significance of the Xiongan New Area
The new area will operate as a new growth pole for the country’s economy, and also aim to curb urban sprawl, bridge growth disparities and protect ecology. It will be of the same national significance as the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, established in the 1980s, and the Shanghai Pudong New Area, created in the 1990s.
According to the circular, the move of the construction of the new area will help phase out some non-capital functions from Beijing, explore a new model of optimised development in densely populated areas, restructure the urban layout in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and cultivate new innovation-driven engines.
