Shenzhen is a modern city with convenient transportation. The city has land, sea, air and rail checkpoints. Checkpoints in Shenzhen have the largest flow of people and goods in China.
CHECKPOINTS
Shenzhen has 15 checkpoints that allow the flow of both Chinese and foreign nationals. Luohu Checkpoint is China's busiest land passenger checkpoint, while Huanggang Checkpoint offers around-the-clock service. Futian Checkpoint offers seamless transfer by Metro to Hong Kong, and Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint offers both Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration inspection services.
CUSTOMS
Shenzhen Customs is under the direct leadership of the General Administration of Customs of China. Shenzhen and Huizhou are both under the jurisdiction of Shenzhen Customs, one of China's busiest customs agencies. It provides around-the-clock customs declarations for enterprises. In 2013, 225 million people and 15.7 million vehicles crossed the border through Shenzhen checkpoints. An average of 43,000 vehicles crossed the border per day.
SHIPPING
In 2013, Shenzhen Port handled 234 million tons of cargo and 23.28 million TEUs of containers, up 2.59% and 1.47% respectively from 2012. Shenzhen ranked third in container throughput worldwide in 2013. A total of 230 international container routes go through Shenzhen, giving the city one of China's highest densities of international liners. It has 14 sister ports.
RAILWAY NETWORK
Shenzhen is an important railway terminal in South China, the regional center of Pearl River Delta and the primary supporting point in the planned transportation network. As the critical lines of Hangzhou-Fuzhou-Shenzhen Railway and Beijing-Hong Kong Railway, Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway started operating in 2013 and 2011 respectively. In addition, Shenzhen North Railway Station, Shenzhen East Railway Station and Shenzhen Pingshan Railway Terminal are becoming regional rail transport hubs in southern China.
ROAD NETWORK
Roads and expressways in Shenzhen form a network that connects the rest of the Pearl River Delta region.
By the end of 2013, Shenzhen had opened long-distance buses to all major counties and cities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, along with more than 20 provinces and regions in China. Shenzhen will play a bigger role as a road transport hub in the pan-Pearl River Delta area with the integration of delta cities and the expansion of the expressway network.
SHENZHEN METRO
Five Metro lines are being operated in Shenzhen, forming a 178-km Metro network. There are 118 stations along the lines, including 13 transfer stations. In 2013, Shenzhen Metro transported an average of 2.5 million people and a maximum of 3.4 million people each day, with the yearly passenger flow reaching 917 million which accounts for 25.9% of the total public tansportation. Metro is an important part of public transport in the city.
CIVIL AVIATION
Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is China's first modern airport that opened to all transport modes - road, waterborne and air. As of March 2014, it has operated 163 air routes to 102 cities and has eight locally based cargo airlines. In 2013, the airport handled 32.27 million passengers, 913,500 tons of cargo and 257,400 takeoffs and landings, up 9.1%, 6.9% and 7.2% respectively from the previous year. A second runway has been put into service. The T3 terminal has been put into use at the airport since November 2013, which enables the airport to handle 45 million passengers, 2.4 million tons of cargo and 375,000 takeoffs and landings a year.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
By the end of 2013, about 6 million passengers had used public buses daily. Residents of Futian, Luohu, Nanshan and Yantian districts all could walk to a bus stop within 500 meters of their home, as could 91% of residents in Bao'an and Longgang. There are 16,023 taxis taking to the street. The number of electric taxis amounts to 850, becoming the largest fleet in the world. In 2013, 432 million passengers took taxis, accounting for 12% of the total passengers who used public transportation.
Together with other elements, the convenient transportation makes Shenzhen one of the most livable cities in China.
